A point I would like to note here is that there are many of the laymen I know who are not pious but of brand Islam have not a clue on the difference between the Quran and the Hadiths.

My personal experience with my (sunni, hadith loving) family may be slowly turning a corner. Consistent study and calm' zero expectation explanations are sowing the necessary seeds. I always end a discussion with the reminder that God alone will judge our deeds on the Last Day ; a point we all agree on.
