In terms of the content: I'm not saying your reading is wrong, but my own take on it is that (at least in places) this wording refers to the fact that the unbelievers would taunt the Messenger to make the end come in order to prove that he was telling the truth.
yes, Muhammad certainly knew that much. I think we should neither over- nor under-estimate Muhammad's role... he was not a "Yoda" but he accomplished a tremendous and no doubt very trying task on behalf of us all.
