I recently discovered his works so I ordered heretics and orthodoxy. I’ve listened to his books and he sound very reasonable...... and now that you’ve confirmed it. I can’t wait to start reading him
Excellent choice. I would read them in that order.
The only thing to bear in mind is that Chesterton is conducting a debate via these essays with his peers (men like Wells and Shaw). While that is all to the good, some of the arguments of that time will not be apparent or relevant today. But, it's a great read.
Chesterton was (famously) close friends with Hilaire Belloc (he of "Matilda" fame). But he did so much more than write children's poems (although that's what he's best remembered for). A very interesting man, he coined one of my favourite quotes. When asked why he worked so hard, he replied: “Because my children are howling for pearls and caviar.” Ha!
If you ever want a good overview of Belloc, I can recommend the biography by Joseph Pierce called Old Thunder.
Thanks for the recommendation now i have Belloc on my reading list. I love a simple refutation of an argument like the way chesterton deal with his contemporaries, because I know deep down that their arguments are so stupid and it’s so refreshing when someone like Chesterton accentuate the stupidity
“feminism is the muddled idea that women are free when they serve their employers but slaves when they serve their husbands”
GK Chesterton
I'm a big fan of GK Chesterton. His book Heretics should be required reading!
